How it works
Accommodation
A safe, welcoming home in Mepe, close to your project, with three home-cooked meals a day. It is all part of your program fee.

Live like a local in Mepe
Interns and gap year changemakers live with a host family in Mepe, a farming and fishing town of about 5,000 people on the Volta River, two hours by road from Accra. Coming home to a family each evening is the fastest way to settle in, pick up a few words of Ewe and understand the community you are working with.
Meet your host
Thelma Dzifah Attiso was born in Mepe and lives there today. As our Director of Ghana Operations, she leads our team on the ground, plans your days and opens her own home to changemakers.
She is your first call for anything you need, from a question about dinner to help on a hard day.
Your home
- A shared room with two beds, or a private room for $25 a day.
- Indoor plumbing, and photos of your room before you fly.
- Airport pickup and drop-off in Accra, and transport between your home and your project sites.
- Electricity and phone coverage. Internet is slower than at home and not guaranteed, so bring an international data plan.
Home-cooked meals
Your host serves three meals a day, plus bottled drinking water. You will eat what the family eats, so come hungry and ready to try local dishes. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you apply, and your host will plan around them.
Drink bottled or filtered water only, never water from the tap.
Safe and supported
- Our Ghana team is on call 24/7. Your host, trip coordinator and partner school are always a phone call away.
- Home by dark. Nights out are your choice, agreed with your host and covered by a signed waiver.
- A strong safety record. Since we started in 2021, no one has fallen ill on our trips and we have had no safety incidents.
Joining the Ghana Solidarity Trip?
Our 11-day group trip, July 21 to 31, 2027, stays in hotels and Airbnbs, with all meals, ground transport and park fees included. Interns whose dates overlap can join the group for the final days. See the trip page for details.
